BEFORE YOU START INSTALLATION
solid hardwood floors

Where to install:

COSWICK solid hardwood flooring is appropriate for installation in all residential areas on and above ground level.
We do not recommend it for below grade as it is very difficult to control humidity on this level and flooring may be affected by moisture.
COSWICK solid hardwood flooring is not recommended for installation over radiant heated floors.

Before Installation:
Before you start installation make sure the following pre-installation requirements are met:
  •
Hardwood flooring should be one of the last items installed during renovation to avoid damage.
  •
Prior to installation heating and air conditioning system must be in operation and room temperature must have been maintained at 18-22° C for at least one week.
  •
Relative humidity on job site should be 45-55% at all times.
  •
To avoid moisture-related damages subfloor must be dry and basement well ventilated. Moisture level of wood subfloor must not exceed 12% and differential between wood planks and subfloor must be less than 4%.
  •

Flooring must be acclimated on the job site under occupancy conditions for four to five days before installation. For acclimation flooring must be unwrapped and cartons must be opened.

Subfloor requirements:

 Subfloor Guidelines

The approved installation requires plywood or OSB (oriented strandboard) panels as a subfloor. Particleboard is not an approved subfloor. Coswick recommends using ¾” plywood or OSB panels for up to 19” spaced joists.Minimal subfloor requirement – 5/8” plywood or OSB panels. This subfloor is approved for up to 16” spaced joists.

 Subfloor Moisture Level

Moisture content in the subfloor should be within 4% to 12% range. If moisture reading is too high, installation has to be postponed. Find and eliminate moisture source. Turn up the heat and increase ventilation. If high indoor humidity is the reason, use dehumidifier. If moisture content in the subfloor is below 4%, use indoor humidifiers to raise moisture level.

Subfloor conditions

In order to avoid squeaking and cracking in your floors make sure that there is no movement in the subfloor. If needed use flooring screws to fix it. Subfloor surface must be flat. Flatten subfloor with a sander or a floor leveler if needed. Clean subfloor using vacuum cleaner and broom.
